I would assume most of you now have heard about the ‘Hey hey it’s Saturday – Red Face’ skit that has created a debate about if the blackface minstrel is racist or not. I would assume most of you have read some of the articles about the incident and how Harry Connick Jr. reacted to it. Based on some of my tweets you can hopefully understand where I stand regarding this unfortunate incident.
Last night I thought I would join the many bloggers to show my dissgust regarding the Jackson Jive act, but after reading some of the comments regarding the skit I assume I would just be speaking to deaf ears. Just by writing what I’ve written so far I’m shocked to not be told I have no sense of humour, I’m too sensitive and too political correct and that if I don’t like it here (Australia) I can go home to where I came from. I will probably also be told that this is how Aussies joke with each other and it’s acceptable here.
Fair enough, everyone has their type of humour. Just don’t forget that everyone is and should be entitled to their own opinion. The majority of the world is on the Internet now, and information spread rapidly. Certain opinions and attitudes a country has can be seen as offensive to one or several other countries, so you just have to expect to get reactions if you might offend someone.
I think it’s fair to say that the majority of the world is in agreement that the blackface minstrel is decades out of date and is in poor taste, and has a racist stigma attached to it. Same with Carlie Chaplin‘s moustache; wear that and majority will think of Hitler before they think of Chaplin.
I could go on about why I think some Aussies find the blackface minstrel acceptable, but I can’t be bothered opening that can of worms. As stated earlier, I’ll just be speaking to deaf ears.
Even if I know where most people stand regarding this, I’m still curious about what my readers thinks about this incident.
Note: As mentioned many times before, I do advocate free speech, but I do not accept personal attacks, hate-speech and anything else that do not intellectually contribute to a debate. I screen all comments for that reason to ensure the possible discussion will be educational for everyone, no matter what opinion you have.
