I think it was in 1999 the Google search engine was launched as test. Before that we had search engines like Alta Vista and did not know any better to what to expect from a search engine. What was unique with Google was that it was accurate. You found what you searched for; instead of some random and useless porn site.
Google became so popular that when someone asks you a stupid question they can look up themselves you just tell them to ‘Google it’; or if someone search Google and found you, you were ‘Googled’.
Scary as it may sound, Google is also taking over our language.
Fast forwarding to 2004 Google released Google Mail, or Gmail as most call. People were excited; because if Google could conquer online searching, how could it fail in the free email market?
Later came Google Docs, Google Calendar and Google Maps with Street View.
Google has also released an operating system for mobile phones and will soon release their own Linux distribution. Just last week they released a DNS service.
When will they be happy?
Just a while ago EFF tweeted the following text:
Google CEO fails privacy test — sez if u want something private “maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.” http://eff.org/r.4d6
In regards to the Street View controversy Google managed to say:
Privacy does not exist any more.
When Google managed to say that privacy does not exist any more I stopped using all Google services I had to log in to. I only continued to use Google Maps and Google Search not being logged in.
If you are logged in with your Google account and use Search, Maps, Docs, calendar and what not; they more or less know everything about you. So how can you trust a company that has that much information about you when they say that ‘privacy does not exist any more’? I can not, that is for sure.
Now when they have released their own DNS service and manages to say, ‘maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place’, I am sick and tired of Google.
Google seems to have this habit to release new services and features without consulting the public. If there are any privacy concerns they will not be addressed until enough people start complaining about it.
Google’s latest attempts to grow its monopoly is to have you use their own Linux Distribution; because to log in, you must have a Google account.
Based on what happened to Microsoft regarding anti-trust laws you would think a younger company would take precautions avoiding becoming too big. If Google continues growing as they are at the moment they will be the next monopoly; the next company going to court not willing to understand why they can not be the only provider of service X.
I am not a bit fan of Microsoft, but the only threat they were was that they did not favour competition and made it difficult for other companies be part of innovation. What Google is doing is far more scary, as they have access to our personal information; but only if we let them. The irony is that the user has the power to change this, because without user information and data Google is nothing.
Google has become what I hate. They have no respect for privacy and they do not care about the user; unless the user provides them the data and information they want. If the user do not play along with Google, they could not care less about that user.
Next time I see a Google Street View car I will with pride give it the middle finger.
To me it is mind-boggling to read about geeks, even people I follow on Twitter, how they can be excited about Google releasing the next thing they announce. Did they not learn anything from what Microsoft did? Some even complain still about Microsoft and claim that Apple is evil. I think far too many have drunk the Google cool-aid; because calling them ignorant is an insult to those who are actually ignorant.
For all I care, Google can fuck off. They started out as a good company that provided good services and alternatives to the other big companies. Now they have become too big and too greedy. They are trying too much to take part in everything and anything.
If I offended Google or any of their blind followers I do not care. Many of you migrated to Google because you wanted to get away from the Microsoft monopoly; the monopoly that only cared about money and crushing competitors. Now you have joined another monopoly that is not to far from doing them same and openly says it does not give a shit about you and your privacy; all they want is your data and information.
Enjoy your Google cool-aid.
I do not. I stuck my fingers down my throat and puked it all up again before it managed to poison me.
Note: This article was written under the influence of alcohol, so take it as it is. Keep your petty so-called opinions to yourself you bloody grammar-nazi. If you are unable to understand what I am trying to say you are an idiot, and would not understand it anyway.
