I do not like swimming during wintertime.
For some odd reason Aussies love to swim in the ocean; and they are extremely proud of their white sandy beaches. I do not get too excited about, uhm, sand. I have never been fond of swimming either. I stayed away from the beach and chose to cool down with water and ice cream. If I absolutely needed to use water to cool down I had a bath tub at home.
Yes, it can get hot in Europe too. Australia do not have copyright on Celsius degrees above 30; nor humidity.
This weekend I was forced at gunpoint to buy swimming trunks; or boarders as they are called here. Aussies tend to give things a very odd and non-logical name.
I also learned that some ‘boarders’ do not have that handy string that goes all they way around to prevent you from suddenly swimming in your birthday suit. Which made me want to leave the beach.
We were first walking on the beach, getting a feel of the temperature. Lizzie was very excited about showing me the rocks on the beach. I have to admit, watching small crabs running around digging holes is kind of fun to me; I am strange like that.
After walking around on the rocks for a few minutes and finding out that after folding the waste of my ‘boarder’s kept it still up and away from the ground, I started to get bored and wondered why we were looking at rocks when we could cool down in the ocean.
After walking further and further out in the ocean I learned why I never liked going swimming in Norway and Sweden. We do not have waves like this. Waves that throw you around and make you fight to keep your head above water. It gave me a slight adrenalin rush. Jumping up when the wave came towards us, or ducking down under the wave. We did not just stand there like zombies, we actually did something in the water.
I guess it is because stems from my interest in sports. Even if I am a quiet and careful introvert I love skateboarding, BMX and other extreme sports that is a bit more exciting than just running around after a leather bladder.
Lizzie is very happy now that she finally got me in the water and that I enjoy it. Hopefully she will still be cool with it when I get my hands on a bodyboard. I tend to enjoy pushing my limits when dealing with certain sports.
My sub-conscience still have not understood we will be celebrating Xmas next week. It is insanely warm and regarding the weather it is not Xmas according to my sub-conscience; it is just a very long summer; that might not end until four years from now.
I should enjoy it though, or at least try. While others are complaining about the winter in Europe now, I am playing at the beach.
