Welcome to the great firewall of Australia!
Unsurprisingly the Australian government plans to go ahead with filtering the Internet for the people living in Australia. Apparently the Australian government do not think that people who are above 18 is not mature enough to censor themselves. Heck, they do not think anyone in Australia is mature enough to make their own decision on what is appropriate or not.
Of course, what else can you expect from a country that does not have a constitutional right to freedom of speech?
I am not too worried about the filter as I know how to get through it. Correct me if I am wrong of course, but I will assume using TOR will suffice to give you access to the Internet as it was intended. What is more worrying is of course the fact that they might not like people doing that; but I do not care to be honest, they can do whatever they want with me.
It is amazing that this is happening in what is considered a developed western country. It is scary how this could be allowed to happen. Not just because it seems that this country is run by idiots who want to control their citizens, but citizens not making enough fuss about it. Are that many Australians happy being accessing a crippled version of the Internet?
This is the final straw, and I hope Lizzie will support me on this, that we are moving back to Europe when she has finished her degree*. I refuse to live in a country that is censoring the Internet and not fully accepting freedom of speech.
* I will tell you all later why I am not mentioning my degree; need to sort out a few things first.
