I want an iPad, but I am not getting one.

When Apple released the iPod Touch I was a bit sceptical as it had no keyboard; you had to touch the screen to type and interact with it. I am very careful with my gadgets, so the last thing I want is finger marks and smudges on the screen. Regardless of that I ended up with an iPod Touc (G1); still have it and still enjoy using it.

The iPad is amazing as it has a much bigger screen that will make the web experience much more enjoyable. As you can connect a bluetooth keyboard it makes it the perfect companion for a writer as it is so compact; which makes it even easier to bring along than a netbook, like my EeePC.

Regardless of the portability I will most likely not get one. It has no ability to connect to an external HDD and it has no slots for memory cards like MMC and SSD, unless you do not mind connecting it to an extra dock; that is a huge disappointment. On top of that they are shipping it with the regular iPhone OS. I understand that Apple like to keep things simple, but does Apple really think they have to dumb it down that much?

The iPad might be extremely portable, but I also want it to be functional. Why bother using a device that has such a large screen, but you can not multitask on it?
I have played around a bit with Moblin and it has a very simple and easy user interface, but you can still multitask and do your regular computer tasks you expect a computer to do.

If I am not getting the Nokia N900 I will for sure get a tablet running or capable of running Moblin or MeeGo, so I have an easy interface to work with, but have no limits on what I do with my own computer.
Of course, if someone manages to figure out how to get Moblin or MeeGo fully functional on an iPad, I might consider it.

Live long and prosper; with freedom.

I agree that the iPad has its share of faults. The design leaves a lot to be desired. I also agree that it needs a much more powerful OS under the hood. I was half expecting it to run (or have the option of running) OS X. Nope. The iPad is really just a glorified iPod Touch. For the sheer portability factor, the iPod Touch wins hands down. While it’s still new and the dust hasn’t fully settled, I believe this version of the iPad has its days numbered. Apple is already talking about scaling the size back in the next version. If they could produce an iPad the size of a paperback book with 3G (so that it still fits in a pocket), I might actually consider replacing my iPod Touch.

iPhone OS is said to have multitasking, so they are heading in the right direction, after everyone else.

I think you are on to something there with the paperback book size of the next iPad.

  1. [...] buy an iPad when you can buy an Eee PC T91MT (or T101MT)? Recently I wrote about that I would like an iPad, but have no plans what so ever to buy one. As it has not been released yet and I really do not have the funds to get one, I am really not in [...]
