Why I have not returned to reddit, yet.

At one point Digg was my main news source for the latest news, but when I found out that I read barely 10% of the news from the Digg RSS feed I stopped using it. You might say I quit Digg twice. I gave it a second chance, but it was the same old story. To me, sifting through 90% of uninteresting stuff is a huge waste of time.

I was later introduced to reddit and enjoyed it a lot. reddit is more of a community and most people there seems less hotheaded as the infamous Digg crowd.
That seems to be changing though.

As reddit is more of a community you will find that instead of sifting through a lot of news, you will be sifting through a lot of opinions; which in the end is to noise to me. reddit is a great community, but I see too much of a ‘I have an opinion and I will share it and you have no right to question that opinion’ attitude growing there.

I personally do not care about opinions, unless I ask for them. To me, facts will always matter more than opinions. What people seem to forget is that an opinion is a statement that is usually biased and not based on facts; an opinion is not a fact.

In other words, and to be a bit more blunt about it, I just got sick of all the bullshit on reddit.

This is not unique to reddit of course. This is a very annoying side-effect of web 2.0.
Opinions are like arseholes, everyone’s got one.
I see it far too often on blogs and news sites. Instead of posting a comment I will instead write my opinion here.

Just because your voice reaches halfway around the world doesn’t mean you are wiser than when it reached only to the end of the bar.

Slashdot seems to still be a bit more civil, but it has its moments though. In the end, I think most communities has a lot to learn from the Slashdot community on how to behave.

I am not sure when I will be back on reddit, but it will not be today, that is for sure.
