Just another rant about writing

Came across an interesting tweet by John Birmingham today.
This is pretty fkn cool. Tips for would-be authors from the Elder Gods. via @randomhouseau http://bit.ly/big-think-rushdie—

It is a video off Rushdie basically saying that writing is created by concentration, not inspiration. You have to see the video to understand what he tries to say, but I can not help to disagree somewhat with that statement. I do not agree that the main process is mainly fueled by concentration, because you need to be focused when composing with words. But how did you get there? What made you sit down and start writing? Or even before that. What made you want to sit down and write?
Inspiration of course!
If you are not inspired to do something, you will either not do it at all or you will not be motivated enough to reach that deep concentration to be able to express yourself in the written word.
Which is rather amusing to think about. While I have been trying, and so far succeeding, to hand in my assignments in time, I have been inspired to write in this blog. Unfortunately I have lacked the concentration to do it, as I have used it all up on getting top marks.
This is the thing when it comes to being creative. Does not matter if it is being creative with words, paint, spray cans, computer graphics, etc. What truly matters is the process. How you get the idea and how you realise the idea. I have seen the same things when writers have been giving advice about writer’s block. Some writers tell you that it does not exist, some will tell you to listen to your unconscious and take a break and some will tell you to fight it. In other words, what works for one person might not work for another. But it is important to listen and follow the advice that works for you!

I think the act of writing is fueled by various factors and it’s difficult to point them all out! But I’m convinces that inspiration is a basic step, and one then needs concentration to formulate his ideas on paper.
Thank you for sharing! :)
