GMX(‘s smpt) is dead to me

The most important thing on the to-do list today was to pitch a few write-up ideas. I wanted to be brief, but not too brief. Finished the emails and clicked ‘Send’.
The username or password … is incorrect.
I check the username and re-entered the password. Same error message. Created a new password. Same result. Unable to send emails via smtp, but no worries with receiving email via imap. I could of course use the web interface, but I hate the GMX web interface. I don’t know why, but I hate it!
When Gmail was released I was one of those lucky buggers who managed to get an invite from a kind American, which in return received a block of Norwegian chocolate. I loved it! Simple web interface. Perfect! But after a while Google didn’t seem to live up to their own: “Do no evil.” Zenbe was released and I quickly switched. Loved it — too! But they decided to close shop. Trying to find a good email provider with imap support wasn’t easy, especially when my budget was, and still are, $0. I knew about GMX and that they have been around for a while. I thought I would end up with GMX for years.
Never assume! Assume makes and ASS of U and ME…
Instead of waiting for GMX’ smtp to be magically fixed I decided to use my Shortmail instead to send out the pitches. It was a good challenge, trying to avoid using more than 500 characters. Not easy, but I managed.
I am slowly switching over to Shortmail anyway, but this was somewhat of an unexpected and forced switch. Maybe it’s one of those events you should take as a hint.
I’ll still hold on to my GMX account for a while of course. Good to have a regular old-school email account handy, and it is perfect to use as a buffer and shopping email.
If only more of my friends were willing to switch over to Shortmail and understand how awesome it is. I’ll keep on preaching the good word of Shortmail to them. So will Shortmail whenever they send me an email with 500 characters or more.
Brevity is the soul of Shortmail.
